Australia to Develop Medium-Range Precision Loitering Munitions
The Australian government has launched a military program to develop medium-range precision loitering munition systems.
Part of the Advanced Strategic Capabilities Accelerator (ASCA) mission, the Talon Strike program will develop kinetic systems with the capabilities of guided missiles.
A request for tenders has already been issued for the capability’s rapid procurement.
Procurement Requirements
It seeks a low-cost domestic capability that bridges “the short to long-range gap and provides the land combat force with enhanced operational effects to mitigate potential adversaries.”
The procurement includes aerial platforms with associated launchers, transport, and storage systems. The munitions will be land-launched.
Responses are sought until May 30, 2025, while the delivery deadline is December 2026.
Sovereign Capability
“The launch of Mission Talon Strike by ASCA is about developing a priority capability at an accelerated pace,” Australia’s Minister for Defence Industry, Pat Conroy, said.
“This mission is aligned with the Albanese Government’s work over the last three years, in conjunction with the ADF (Australian Defence Force), to develop a domestically manufactured precision loitering munition capability that addresses threats quickly and accurately.
“Through Talon Strike, we are continuing to back Australian industry and ingenuity while demonstrating support for a critical pathway to meet the needs of the ADF.”
Counter-Drone Development
The program follows the launch of Mission Syracuse, which seeks sovereign counter-small drone capabilities.
Mission Syracuse will complement the Australian Department of Defence’s Project LAND 156, which seeks a comprehensive counter-small drone capability system for the ADF.
“ASCA’s mission is to accelerate the development and transition of asymmetric capabilities to the Australian Defence Force by working with Australian industry through innovation to meet priority needs,” said Major General Hugh Meggitt, head of the Advanced Strategic Capabilities Accelerator.
“In response to evolving threats of small drones, the Government directed Defence to accelerate acquisition of counter drone capabilities through the 2024 National Defence Strategy; Mission Syracuse will help enable investment in cutting-edge systems that can operate both domestically and internationally.”
