India Tests Advanced Naval Mine as Region Hurtles Toward War

India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), along with the Indian Navy, has test-fired a domestically developed underwater sea mine.

The Multi-Influence Ground Mine has been designed to enhance the navy’s capabilities against modern stealth ships and submarines.

It features sensors that pick up acoustic, magnetic, pressure, and underwater electric potential/extra low frequency electric field signatures generated by vessels.

Powered by a lithium-thionyl chloride battery, the 1,000-kilogram (2,205 pounds) weapon can be deployed from platforms such as ships, coastal observation and patrol stations, and submarines.

It was developed by DRDO’s Naval Science & Technological Laboratory in collaboration with the High Energy Materials Research Laboratory and Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory.

Production partners are Bharat Dynamics Limited and Apollo Microsystems Limited.

Indian Strikes Inside Pakistan

The test preceded New Delhi’s response to a major terrorist attack in Indian-administered Kashmir last month that India believes was orchestrated by Pakistan.

Several people have been killed in Pakistan in the Indian response, involving fighter jets and precision-guided munitions.

Before that, New Delhi announced a host of other punitive measures against Pakistan, drawing a reciprocal response from Islamabad.
